Plot :: The action takes place in Japan during the Taisho era (1920s). The protagonist, a young man named Hiiragi Kyoichirou, comes to the capital from the village to study. And immediately gets involved in a conflict between the imperial army and a mysterious clan.

Disclaimer! There may be spoilers on this page! Also I rate novels only based on my preferences.

I don’t have enough words to fully express how much this visual novel impressed me. Everything about it is stunning – from the background music to the storyline – but I’ll try to give it as fair and level-headed a review as possible.
First off, the art/visuals. There’s really nothing to complain about here; I was more than satisfied with the style and quality.

Second, the voice acting and soundtrack – and oh god, it’s absolutely beautiful. A couple of the tracks have even earned a permanent spot in my playlist. I honestly have nothing more to add here; you need to play this game just for the background music alone.

The protagonist / Hiiragi Kyouichirou / CV: Shachihoko Taro
A young man who came to Tokyo from his home village of Momoki to enroll in the Imperial University. He is kind, but having been taught "nobility obligates" by his parents, he has an inflexible streak that doesn't allow him to turn a blind eye to injustice. He is skilled in swordsmanship and brought with him a katana that has been passed down in his family for generations. He is being pressured into cooperation with the military because he has the ability to see spirits.

Hmmm... / Misaki / CV: Oily Hana
A young man who appears whenever Kyouichirou is in trouble. Just as Kyouichirou, he possesses supernatural abilities, and for that reason he warns him to stay away from the military. He is gruff, forceful, and somewhat enigmatic, but he becomes someone Kyouichirou can rely on when it matters.

Cool dude / Tatebayashi Kai / CV: Toorisugari
A military man who commands a reserve unit of the Imperial Japanese Army and possesses supernatural abilities such as summoning the dead. He has sworn loyalty to the Emperor who rules over Japan and is well-liked, but for certain reasons he has now relinquished his rank. Due to his conscientious and uncompromising personality, he is regarded as a hindrance by the military authorities. He is of noble birth.

Shiki 2.0 / Senge Iori / CV: Yotsuya Cider
A radical within the military who formulates and promotes the undead troops plan. However, all of these actions are for the sake of the Great Japanese Empire, and not for personal gain. He leads fourteen families of Shinto priests and possesses very strong supernatural abilities himself. A member of the new aristocracy.

He's just cute / Shigure / CV: Izumi Kikunosuke
A rare Toshima resident who doesn't participate in Igra, instead acting as an information broker. He does seem sincere about wanting to help, and despite his quirks he gives good advice.

I should mention that the story isn’t exactly an easy one to follow (though you probably got that from the summary). That’s actually the main reason I wouldn’t recommend this as someone’s first visual novel – it’s better to start with something more straightforward (like Togainu no Chi, for example).
To fully understand and uncover all the mysteries, you have to reach every single ending. That’s not optional. Everything changes drastically depending on the path you choose.

TW :: blood, reanimated corpses, violence (mostly physical), death.
My rating :: 10/10. If you’re into well-written, complex stories, it doesn’t get much better than this.
